Image of Mosaic Art

Over the last half term, we have been studying Roman Mosaic Art. We learnt that Mosaics have been found that show scenes of history, as well as everyday Roman life. Mosaics were made from tiny coloured stones which they called tesserae. We also learnt that the floors of Roman buildings were often richly decorated with mosaics. Mosaic floors were a statement of how wealthy and important you were. Poor people would not be able to afford them. The bigger and more detailed the mosaic, the more impressive. The mosaic would decorate the floor of the main room. These were stuck to the floor with mortar, a type of cement. Over the past few weeks we’ve been studying mosaics and planned some of our designs we then recreated today using foam tiles. I’m sure you’ll agree, when the mosaics come home, just how hard the children worked and how fantastic their mosaics really are!
